Waitlists remain active through the summer. Schools continue making offers as families decline.(NYC DOE, 2025-26)

1

Find your zoned school

Every NYC address is zoned for one elementary school. Your child has priority enrollment at this school — in most cases, you are guaranteed a seat.(NYC DOE, 2025-26)

Use our Zone Checker to find your zoned school instantly. Just type your address.

📍 Check My Zone →

You can also verify at schoolsearch.schools.nyc or call the school directly.

2

Create your MySchools account

Go to myschools.nycand create an account. Add your child's information (name, birthday, address). If you already created an account for 3K or Pre-K, you can use the same one — just add your child again for the K application.

Important:Your application is tied to your address. If you're moving, use the address where you'll be living when school starts. You may need to provide proof of residency (lease, utility bill) later.
3

Research and rank your schools

You can list up to 12 schoolson your application, ranked in order of preference. Here's what to know:

  • Include your zoned school. This is your safety net. Even if you rank it last, your zoned priority still applies.
  • Non-zoned schools are a long shot. Popular schools (PS 6, PS 290, PS 158) haven't accepted out-of-zone students in years.
  • G&T programs are separate. Gifted & Talented programs appear on the same application but use a separate lottery.
  • Order matters. You're automatically waitlisted at schools you ranked higher than where you got an offer, but NOT lower ones.

4

Submit by the deadline

Submit your application on MySchools before the deadline. It doesn't matter when you submit — submitting on day 1 vs the last day makes no difference. Only your lottery number and priority group matter.(NYC DOE, 2025-26)

You can edit your application (change rankings) until the deadline. After submission, you'll receive a confirmation but you will NOT see your lottery number until after the deadline closes — this changed recently and is a source of frustration for many parents.

5

Receive your offer (and understand the waitlist)

Offers are released on MySchools on a single day (March 31 for 2026-27). You'll see:

  • Your offer — the school where you got a seat
  • Your waitlist positions — for schools you ranked higher than your offer
  • You can add yourself to additional waitlists manually after offers come out
Don't panic if waitlisted at your zoned school. This happened in 2026 at popular schools like PS 6 due to high application volume. Historically, all zoned students get a seat by the start of school — only 62% of offer holders accepted at PS 6 last year, so waitlists move fast.(Parent reports, 2025-26)
6

Accept and register

Accept your offer on MySchools by the deadline (~May 1). Then contact the school to complete registration — you'll need to provide:

  • Proof of address (lease, utility bill, bank statement)
  • Child's birth certificate
  • Immunization records
  • Your photo ID

Accepting an offer does NOT affect your waitlist positions. If you get a better offer later from a waitlist, you can switch — but your previous offer is automatically released.

What if I don't get my first choice?

Stay on waitlists. Waitlists move significantly between March and September. Parents decline offers, move, or choose private school. The WhatsApp groups light up all summer with movement.
Contact the school directly. After the initial offers, individual schools manage their own waitlists. Call the parent coordinator and express your interest — schools want families who are committed.
Don't hold a spot you won't use.If you're going private or accepted elsewhere, release your seat so another family can have it.
Your zoned school will come through. Even if initially waitlisted at your zoned school, zoned students have historically always gotten a seat by September.

Private school timing conflict

This is the #1 source of stress for families considering both options. Private school (ISAAGNY) decisions come out in early February. Public school K offers come out in late March. You have to commit to private before you know your public school placement.(ISAAGNY, 2025-26)

There's no perfect solution. Some families put deposits at private schools knowing they might forfeit if public works out. The deposit is typically non-refundable.
